Mirador-One of Rocky Point's Treasures

alt Back in the day, pre-resorts that is. The Mirador was the place to be. If you weren’t a camper there really weren’t a whole lot of other options. It was where we stayed on our first trip to Rocky Point in 1989. A friend of mine had visited Rocky Point several times before and highly recommended a rental at the Mirador

I’ll never forget how excited we all were. Like most Americans back then we traveled in packs.  Our kids were just babies at the time, maybe five or so if I remember correctly. We had no idea what to expect and were more than a little nervous about traveling to a foreign country for the first time.

Although we knew better, I think we all expected outdoor plumbing and dirt floors. To our great delight however, we had rented an amazing seaside house and couldn’t wait to get our things unpacked.  We set up our volleyball net, parked our beach chairs, and behaved like lazy beach bums for five whole days. Except for occasional altfeedings, naps, and the need to pull our boys out from under a bed every time the neighbor’s girls came over to play, we were rooted to the spot and had a wonderful time.

Much has changed in Rocky Point in the last 20 years. Resorts have sprung-up everywhere, spring breakers have taken over the Mirador and Americans have lost the pack mentality. My husband and I bought property, built a home, and opened a beauty salon & supply. And to my utter surprise, my son grew up somewhere in between, all really good things in my opinion.

It had been some years since we visited the Mirador (a total of 5 minutes away), so last Sunday we decided to spend the afternoon there. It was like stepping back in time. All of those peaceful, happy feelings that I remembered from our first trip to Rocky Point came flooding back. Just like visiting an old friend. For those of you that miss the old Rocky Point, the Mirador is definitely for you. Pristine beach as far as you can altsee, amazing wildlife, and the most beautiful reef you’ve ever seen.
While spring break lasts only two weeks out of the year, there are 54 more weeks for us to enjoy the Mirador. If it’s been a while since you ventured over there or if it’s your first trip to Rocky Point, I suggest you add it to your “to do” list.   You won’t be disappointed.
